Flag Retirement Ceremony on Apr 21
Posted March 30, 2012

The Fort Graham Chapter Texas Daughters of the American Revolution is teaming up with local Boy Scout Troop 387 to host a Flag Retirement Ceremony on Saturday, April 21. The event will take place at 2pm, overlooking Lake Whitney next to White Bluff Resort's hotel.

Members of the troop will perform the solemn ceremony giving respect to American flags that have become too worn or faded for further use.  The public is invited and should bring lawn chairs.

The flag retirement ceremony is an outgrowth of the work of the Fort Graham chapter's work of restoring flags that have been flown at the Veterans' Hospital in Waco.  Frayed, but otherwise intact flags are repaired by folks recruited by the chapter and then given to local residents and businesses to be flown again.  Volunteers who have repaired flags include Linda Wilmarth, Alminice Harris, Rhonda Bass, Phyllis Olson, Carlene Gribble and Linda's Upholstery.    Repaired flags can be found flying at the Park Plaza Nursing Home, DAV Thrift Store, Sun Country, the City of Whitney, and the Lake Whitney Area Museum.
Individuals or groups wishing to assist with the flag repair and rehabilitation program should contact Carlene Gribble at fortgrahamdar@gmail.com.

Steiner Valley History
Posted March 3, 2012

Interested in local history? You might want to borrow a copy of the "Hill County (Texas) Trilogy by Harold Simpson, from either a neighbor, or the Whitney or Hillsboro libraries. One 16-page chapter, titled "The Fort Graham Affair", describes events that happened in the mid 1800's, just a mile or so from White Bluff. The story involves the man after whom Steiner Valley was named.

From the book: "On the morning of September 6, 1853, the Post Surgeon, Josephus M. Steiner, mortally wounded the Post Commander, Major Ripley A. Arnold, in a gunfight in front of Arnold's Quarters. What followed the next few months and extending to several years after Arnold had been gunned down was almost as unbelievable as the killing itself and had all the ingredients of a comic opera. The murder set off a chain of judicial and legal manipulations and shenanigans not known previously in the annals of American Jurisprudence."

Streetside House Numbers Save Lives
Posted February 5, 2012

Anyone who has tried to find a specific house within White Bluff based on just the street address knows that the house numbering system here can be confusing. During the night, that is even more so the case.

Emergency responders come from both within White Bluff and outside of the resort. Reflective streetside house numbers can be a big help in locating your home. If there are flames coming through the roof, it may not be too difficult to find your location. But if the emergency call is because you just had a heart attack, that is a different situation.

The WB VFD sells reflective streetside house numbers for $30, installed. If you do not already have these at your home, consider emailing Bob Harris or calling him at 694-1733 to get a set installed. They just might save your life.

Surf's Up!
Posted January 27, 2012

What a difference one big rain can make.

Recent widespread rains of nearly 5" have already added close to 7 feet to the Lake Whitney lake level. Upstream, Lake Granbury is full and has been releasing large amounts of water downstream to Lake Whitney, with the lake level still on the rise. The before and after pictures, of the marina, taken 1/7/12 and 1/27/12, show what a difference this has made.

Boaters take note though. The heavy rains have also picked up a huge amount of debris from area streams and brought it to the lake; there are numerous large logs and piles of debris floating in some areas of the lake.

Christmas Card Recycling
Posted December 23, 2011

Once again, the Wilmarth's are collecting used Christmas cards (and any other used greeting cards) on behalf of St Jude's Ranch for Children in Texas and Nevada.

The children of St Jude's participate in making new cards by removing the fronts of the cards and attaching a new back made with recycled paper.

If you would like to help, you can drop off any used cards you have at the Wilmarth home. You can cut off the backs and drop off just the fronts, or you can drop off the entire card and they will remove the backs. Greeting cards with handwriting on the back side of the front of the card cannot be used.

The address to drop off the cards is 46010 White Bluff Dr. It is a gray stone house just past the condos. If no one is home, there will be a box to the right of the front door where you can leave them. Please drop off your cards by the middle of January.

For more information on the program, email Linda Wilmarth or call her at 694-4236, or go to the St Jude's greeting card recycling program website.

Smoke on the Water
Posted November 28, 2011

Warm water and cool fall air in the early morning combine to create what appears to be smoke on the water, actually just localized fog. In the fall, it frequently appears to flow down the Brazos into the north end of Lake Whitney.

Boat Winterizing
Posted November 16, 2011

For those boats still on lifts in the marina, winterizing your inboard or I/O engine may be especially important this year. With water levels extremely low in the marina, both the water and localized air temperatures could be lower than normally experienced, providing an increased risk of freezing.

Also, give the boat battery (and the trolling motor battery) a good charge before the freezing weather approaches; a full charge is the best protection against battery damage over the winter.

Walking for Our Racks
Posted November 16, 2011

Congratulations and recognition to four of our White Bluff ladies Crystal Dudley, Lisa McCoy, Julie Britt and Yvonne Curtis for participating in the Susan G. Komen 3 Day Walk for the Cure in Dallas the first weekend in November. The walk was 60 miles (20 miles each day) and there were 2,476 walkers. They also played and supported the Rally for the Cure in White Bluff in October. They are to be commended for this great effort and said they wouldn't mind doing it again (they must have already forgotten the blisters at the end of the third day).

The team "Walking for Our Racks" has already raised $7,661 for the benefit and can still turn in contributions until Dec 7. Anyone wishing to contribute and support this worthy cause can call Crystal at 694-6892.

WB Homeowner's Insurance Price Reduction
Posted November 7, 2011

The White Bluff VFD, along with White Bluff Resort, is constantly working to improve the delivery of fire suppression systems within WB. Over a year ago, they contacted the ISO (Insurance Services Office) in Austin, regarding our classification. A detailed on-site study was conducted in 2010. Prior to this effort, we had been classified 8/9 (out of 10); now our classification has been reduced to 5.

This means that all homeowner's should see a noticable reduction in the cost of their homeowner's insurance, effective at the time of their next annual renewal. If your insurance does not drop next time you renew, talk to your agent and make sure they are using the new ISO rating of 5 for White Bluff.

Over 200 people attended this year's event, and many more who could not attend contributed donations. The kids enjoyed a special storytime and entertainment just for them.

Knitting Classes
Posted October 10, 2011

Believe it or not, at some point it WILL get cold here at White Bluff. So if anyone is interested in learning how to knit, this might be a good time for you to also learn how to knit.

WHEN: The class will be held at 10am to 11am over three Mondays: October 31st through Monday, November 14th 2011. Depending on the number of interested people and the desires of the group, we can add a session to learn more complicated knitting stitches and/or projects after Thanksgiving week.

WHERE: White Bluff Chapel

INSTRUCTOR: Marcia Kane

CLASS SIZE: Class will be held if at least 3 people are interested. Class size will be limited to no more than 10 people.

MATERIALS NEEDED FOR CLASS: Size 10 or 12 knitting needles. I will provide the yarn, instruction sheets, etc. for you to keep.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN: At the end of the class you will know how to read and understand a basic knitting pattern, know how to "cast on, Knit, Perl, and learn some unique pattern stitches, such as the cable stitch, popcorn stitch, and so on. With this information you'll be able to knit basic scarves and Afghans. The ultimate joy of knitting for me is that it’s a great way to “mentally” escape (especially during TV commercials!), and it is so fun to give knitted gifts to loved ones. My mother made an afghan for every one of her 6 children, 33 grandchildren and great grandchildren. They cherish these as a gift from her forever

WHO DOES NOT WANT TO LEARN TO KNIT: If you want to finish a project quickly (such as a crocheted hat or afghan), knitting may not be for you. Knitting takes more time and patience than crocheting. For example, I just recently completed an afghan, and it was a complicated pattern. It took over 80 hours of work to complete the 15 individual panels and crochet it together. Similar to the time it takes to complete a needlepoint … but in this case, you don’t need exceptional eye sight!

PLEASE RSVP NO LATER THAN October 21 if you want to take this class, via email to Marcia K. Kane, or call her at 694-9914.

Covered Bridge Closing Temporarily
Posted October 5, 2011, updated October 10, 2011

On Monday, November 7th the covered bridge will be closed to allow the repair and replacement of the wooden planks. WB hopes to reopen the bridge by Thursday, November 10th.

In the interim, the "boxcar gate" off of Steiner Valley County Road will be used for entrance into and exit out of WB. This county road runs east/west and separates Steiner Valley Ranch from White Bluff Resort.

If you are leaving White Bluff, turn north on Rolling Oaks Drive, which is the road just west of the covered bridge. Drive 0.6 miles. At the "T", make a right onto Westmeadow Dr. Drive about 0.1 miles. Just past Oakdale Dr, you will see the exit on your left. If you get to the point where Westmeadow makes a right turn and becomes Sandy Creek Dr, then you have gone too far.

If you are entering White Bluff, the turn off from State Highway 933 to County Road 1145 is approximately one mile north of the entrance to White Bluff. The "boxcar gate" is approximately 0.8 miles down 1145.

The temporary entrance/exit will be manned 24/7 and will be lit at night. The "boxcar gate" is one of the emergency exits to be used in case the main entrance is not usable. For those unfamiliar with this gate this temporary inconvenience will be a good excuse to learn the route. Detour signs will be on White Bluff Drive and Trailwood Drive.

Emergency Evacuations at White Bluff
Posted September 28, 2011

White Bluff Resort has recently published an evacuation policy and evacuation map, to be used in case of emergencies such as fire.

In addition to the main exit to FM 933 on White Bluff Drive, the map shows three other exits that can be used if use of the White Bluff Drive exit is impractical.

Hill County "Reverse 911" will be used to notify residents of the emergency. If you are not already receiving these calls for recent warnings such as local thunderstorms, see the previously posted article on how to add your name to this list.

FEMA has information online regarding evacuation plans. The American Red Cross has information on home fire preparation.

For more information on the White Bluff evacation map and policy, email the POA office or call them at 694-0366.

Bridge Out and Road Closed
Posted September 12, 2011

If you are heading to/from the metroplex and typically use FM 934 between the town of Itasca and Texas 171, you should be aware that there is a bridge being rebuilt there and that the road is closed. It is expected to be closed for at least several months.

An alternative, heading south, is to take I35-W Exit 12 for "FM 67, Covington", about 4 miles north of the FM 934 exit. Then take FM 67 west (right) for 7 miles to Texas 171. Take 171 south (left) for 4 miles, then head east (right) onto FM 934 and continue as usual.

What Happens When You Call 911 in WB
Posted August 22, 2011; revised September 20, 2011

In case of any medical emergency at White Bluff, you should always call 911.

The White Bluff VFD will be first responders to the scene, typically arriving in just a few minutes.  Richard Ashley of the VFD is an EMT, and the other members of the VFD receive monthly medical training from a paramedic with the Lake Whitney EMS (Emergency Medical Services).

At the same time that your 911 call is forwarded to the WB VFD, the closest available ambulance will be dispatched.   A certified Emergency Medical Dispatcher will continue to get more information from you, even as the ambulance is on its way.

White Bluff is located within Emergency Services District (ESD) #2. The nearest ESD #2 ambulance location is on 933 about 3 miles south of White Bluff, just behind the Country Club Retirement Center. The ambulance will typically arrive at WB within 5 minutes after you call 911, on its way to your location within WB.

Once the ambulance arrives, control of the situation is turned over to the paramedics.  If it is determined that a helicopter transport is needed, the fastest available helicopter service will be called.  Both CareFlite and Air-Evac helicopters are close enough to be at the scene within 15-20 minutes of the call; Air-Evac provides the majority of air responses within White Bluff.

A flight to Waco or Burleson costs between $15,000 and $20,000. To reduce these costs, if your insurance does not cover this, you can join Air Evac for an annual fee of approximately $50 per household.  The ESD#2 Board pays for membership in Care Flite air service for all White Bluff residents.

For more information on Air Evac, call 800-793-0010 or go to www.lifeteam.net . Click here for a 1, 3, or 5 year application (this format includes a Hilco-sponsored discount on the the 1-year application).  If you prefer an online application, you can find that at http://www.lifeteam.net/Membership/overview.aspx

For more information on Care Flite, call 877-339-2273 or go to www.careflite.org .  If you have not already signed up for this membership, click here for the form that you should fill out to do so.

Model Jet Aircraft Show
Posted August 22, 2011

On September 8-11, the Heart of Texas Model Aircraft Club (HOTMAC) will host its 29th Greater Southwest Jet Rally. This annual event brings model jet aircraft and their pilots from a multi-state area to Waco for 4 days of model jet aircraft exhibition flying and fun.

The planes have real turbine engines and reach speeds of over 200 mph. The aerobatic flying is exceptional and many of the model pilots are commercial pilots.

The event  runs Thursday-Sunday  and is unstructured;  exhibition flying takes place pretty much all day long.   The largest number of participants are present Friday and Saturday from 11am-6pm.

The event and parking are free, supervised children are welcome and food concessions are on site.  The paddock area is covered, but  sunscreen and a hat are a good idea.   Earplugs are strongly recommended.

WB VFD BBQ & Street Dance Tickets on Sale

Posted August 15, 2011

Tickets to this year's WB VFD BBQ and Street Dance are now available from any VFD member. Additionally, they will be sold at all of the mailboxes on Tuesday, September 6, from 1pm - 6pm.

The dinner and dance will be held Saturday, September 24, from 5pm - 9pm, at the firehouse. Tickets are $35 per couple or $18 for singles (kids $5 at the door) and the proceeds will go to help pay for the newly-acquired fire truck which will be on display at the dance. Chief Bob Kruse will talk about the improvements that the fire department has made, which should result in lower home insurance rates beginning this fall.

This year's menu will feature BBQ brisket and sausage, beans, potato salad, drink and dessert. Dinner will be served from 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm. The Total Strangers band (formerly Cherokee Rose) will once again perform at the street dance, from 6pm - 9pm.

As in the past, there will be a cash pot drawing, and a raffle of items donated by local businesses. The "Christmas Miracle" quilt, which was handmade by the WB quilting group, will be part of this raffle. This year's Cash Pot winner is expected to keep the proceeds - not to donate them back to the VFD. The VFD also expects to have an Emergency Services helicopter and an ambulance on display.

The kid's program is being expanded this year. Held from 7pm - 8pm, it will include face painting, storytime, puzzles, videos, and games. Rides on one of the fire engines will be available at the end of the program.

Bring your own chairs. Alcohol not permitted.

Free American Flags Available
Posted May 23, 2011

The Fort Graham Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, has used 5' x 8' American flags available for anyone who wants to fly them. They have flown over the Veterans' Hospitals in Waco and Temple and are slightly weathered, but still of very good quality.

These flags are collected and sorted by DAR member, Carlene Gribble, and her husband, Jerry, a veteran. Fred Molson has offered to distribute the flags through the White Bluff Administration Office. Some of the flags are in need of repair. If mending is needed on the flag you select, instructions will be provided for you when the flag is picked up, or the DAR ladies will arrange for the repair to be done for you.

These flags have been flown as an honor to our veterans and should be treated with respect. They should never be used as drapery or clothing.  When the blue field and stars of white are separated from the 13 stripes, it is no longer considered to be a flag; however, the pieces should be destroyed in a dignified way, by burning.

Volunteers willing to repair the tattered edges of the flags need only to be able to use a sewing machine, trim the flag edges and turn a shirttail hem. Those interested in contributing their time to this patriotic effort should email Carlene or call her at 694-2355.

2011 Annual POA Meeting
Posted May 23, 2011

The 2011 annual POA meeting has held on May 21 at the New Course pavilion.

There are currently 624 residences in White Bluff. For the years ending in May:

  2009 2010 2011
Permits issued 9 11 6
Homes completed 19 10 13
Under construction 11 12 3
$/sq ft A/C space 110 95 105
Square feet 3500 3200 3500

There are 60 miles of roads within White Bluff. Compared to prior years, over the past 2 years the roads have deteriorated at a more rapid pace. The age of the roads (many are now 15-20 years old) and last spring's flooding contributed to this. The POA recognizes that road repair is a big concern, and they have hired a consultant to provide them with a multi-year plan to help prioritize repairs.

The WB VFD had several items for discussion:

  • Recently, the VFD has increased medical training for its volunteers, and there is now an EMT within WB. This has cut 3-4 minutes in response time for medical emergencies, which can be significant.
  • Our ISO rating, which had been an 8/9 (out of 10) is expected to be improved to a 4/5 in the next 3-4 months. This should mean about a 10% reduction in insurance premiums, depending on your company.
  • The WB VFD was instrumental in preventing damage to structures within The Cliffs Resort at Possum Kingdom during this spring's wildfires. Mike Ward presented a plaque to Fire Chief Bob Kruse. Earlier this month, both Double Diamond and the Cliffs POA presented checks to thank the VFD for its efforts.
  • Bob asked everyone to consider volunteering to become a fire fighter and/or member of the medical response team. Adequate staffing of the department is a major concern now.

Of the six POA directors, two of them (Mike Ward and Fred Curran) had terms that were expiring this year. Geroge Collins nominated each of them to another term. There were no nominees from the floor, and both were re-elected to three year terms.

A review of the annual financial statement was presented by the auditors. Copies of the entire statement can be obtained at the White Bluff Admin building.

There has not been any progress on obtaining a closer AT&T cell tower in the past year. A complaint has been filed with the FCC, and Rob Tennison is currently waiting for a response to that.

Estate Sale Opportunity
Posted May 13, 2011

Note: Sale CANCELLED due to lack of participation.

Tricia Shelton is looking for people who like her have too much good stuff to just give away and would like a cool place to have a one-time only sale. We can have the use of the old Frugal's. It is large; it has electricity and is AIR CONDITIONED; it has shelving; it is covered, and therefore, protected from the elements; it has fabulous visability right in the middle of Whitney.

However, it does cost to run the electricity, and she wants to get a large banner to put on the fence, some signs to put on the road, and put it in about 4 of the small area papers. IF SHE CAN GET INTEREST FROM about 40 families (more or less), then she can proceed.

Tricia is asking a fee of $40 to help pay the expenses for a Friday evening (open 4-7 pm - set up that morning); Saturday (8 AM - 5 PM); and Sunday (11 AM - 5 PM). Looking at weekend of June 10-12.

Please email Tricia or call her at 325-658-1343 to tell her if you are interested. Crafters, artists welcome- this doesn't have to be old stuff. Great time to showcase your work. We'll advertise it!! With many families participating, we can get much more interest going.

Hill County Emergency Notification System
Posted April 18, 2011

Some people at White Bluff have received phone calls regarding weather alerts, etc. from the Hill County Emergency Notification System.  (There was a call on Friday, April 15, 2011 regarding air quality because of the fires in Texas.)  There is no explanation why only some of the phone numbers within White Bluff are receiving these notifications.

If you have not received any of the phone calls, in order to get your phone number into the system, you will need to submit your name, address, and home phone number to one of the following (you may also submit a cell number and/or email address):

  • Visit the website at www.hilloem.com and complete the form at the bottom of the page, OR
  • Email your name, complete address, and phone number to Tim Hemrick, who is with the Emergency Management System in Hillsboro.

Cleburne to take Water from Lake Whitney
Posted April 18, 2011

Last week, the Lakelander reported that Cleburne will begin taking 4 million gallons of water per day from Lake Whitney, starting around 2018. While this seems like a large amount, because of the size of Lake Whitney, this will actually lower the lake level by only about 2.3" per year.

Last Supper Quilt on display in White Bluff,
Thursday, April 21
Posted April 14, 2011

Measuring over 15 feet wide and almost 6 feet high, a Waxahachie dentist, Dr. Don Locke, pieced this quilt as he was beginning to ease into retirement. It was done by piecing 51,816 half-inch squares of cotton fabric together with over 350 different colors represented, many of them hand-dyed. Construction time was over 1,200 hours, done in a 2 1/2 year period.

The quilt was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper," painted 500 years ago on the wall of a Dominican cloister in Milan, Italy.

It will be on display starting at 6:30 pm on Thursday, April 21, at the White Bluff Chapel. The public is welcome to come view the quilt. A church service beginning at 7:30 is also open to anyone who wishes to stay.

For more information on the quilt, you can visit the quilt's website.

Battle of the Benches
Posted January 6, 2011

Have you heard about the famous Whitney "Battle of the Benches"?

In 1949, Whitney was featured in an issue of Life magazine, when an election was held to determine if elderly gentlemen, known as the "spit and whittlers", could continue their pastimes while sitting on a long bench in downtown Whitney, or whether the more genteel ladies of the town, who were offended by the men's spitting and language, would prevail.

The bench is still downtown, on the west side of Brazos Street in downtown Whitney, just south of Washington Avenue.

The rest of the story follows:

In 1922, D. Scarborough, a local druggist, placed a long cedar bench in downtown Whitney for elderly gentlemen to sit, whittle, chew tobacco and discuss news of the day.

In 1949, some ladies asked Mayor Fred Basham to remove the bench, complaining about the spitting and language used by the old men.  The Mayor complied by having the Chief of Police move the bench into an alley nearby.

The "spit and whittlers" were outraged.  They brought nail kegs to sit on where the bench had been. The city removed the kegs.

Upset senior citizens presented a petition to the City Council requesting their bench be returned "where it belonged."  The City called a special election, which was held in August, 1949. The old men won 124 to 67, and the Mayor announced the outcome while standing on a nail keg.

New benches were built on the Brazos Street site, and a water fountain added.  The benches have been refurbished, and all are welcome to have a seat themselves, where history was made.  They are on the west side of Brazos Street in downtown Whitney, just south of Washington Avenue.

"Battle of the Benches" received nationwide publicity and really put Whitney, the best town by a dam site, on the map.  Life magazine, in its August 15, 1949 issue, ran a picture spread and other magazines and newspapers carried articles.  The Life magazine article is now on display at the Whitney Area Museum in town.

Mayor Basham survived the criticism and lived to be an "old man" himself, enjoying retirement in Whitney.

Christmas Card Recycling
Posted December 19, 2010

For the third year, the Wilmarth's are collecting used Christmas cards (and any other used greeting cards) on behalf of St Jude's Ranch for Children in Texas and Nevada.

The children of St Jude's participate in making new cards by removing the fronts of the cards and attaching a new back made with recycled paper. In 2008, 15 pounds of greeting card fronts were collected in White Bluff, and in 2009, 42 pounds were collected to help the St Jude's program.

WB POA Town Hall Meeting
Posted November 15, 2010

George Collins called the 11/13 WB POA Town Hall meeting to order with the Board, Fred Molsen and about 60 residents present.  He reported that through September, we are on plan for the POA budget as established earlier in the year.   All capital improvements this year were fully funded from revenues including about $250K for contracted road repairs completed earlier this year and $106K for the POA portion of the Old Course greens replacement.

Milt Bergman reported that the WB roads suffered substantial damage from the flooding earlier this year. 30-40 areas were affected and the estimated cost to repair them is $135-300K. Fred Molsen has asked the insurance company to evaluate the road damage to see if insurance coverage applies. At the same time the POA is looking at improving some of the more heavily trafficked roads with extra width and concrete ribbon curbing. Milt is soliciting help from any property owner Civil Engineers or persons with roads experience in support of this effort – contact Milt if you can help.

George also reported that Financial policies for POA funds have been established and are in place; a copy is available for review at the POA office. The Bylaws of the POA are now on the POA website in the POA subsection of the Members section, along with minutes of the two most recent board meetings. The POA is making a significant effort to make increased use of the website to improve communication.

Guin McGinnis, President of the WBVFD announced the purchase and in-service status of the new pumper fire engine. This equipment was purchased at the recommendation of a consultant as part of a plan to improve our ISO (Insurance) rating. The new ISO inspection will take place in February 2011 and all insurance companies will be notified of the results.

Susan Johnston spoke on behalf of the Joint Committee for Christmas to announce the "Toys for Angels" Christmas gift program. There will be a gift drop-off date at the WBVFD on Sunday 12/12 from 2-4 PM. In addition, Double Diamond has generously donated $500 in support of this effort.

Milt Bergman explained Careflight Air Ambulance Services and reminded the residents that everyone is automatically a member as part of Hill County ESD #2. However it is important that you fill out the sign-up information card . Air Evac was also mentioned as a second provider of air ambulance service; Air Evac membership is by subscription and a discount is available through Hilco.

Fred Molsen announced that the AT&T tower will not be built this year. Improvements are planned for Bear Creek RV Park to add 50 amp electrical service, and repairs will be made to bathroom facilities at both RV parks. He also mentioned that there are currently no plans for new greens on the New Course. They are looking at a plan for "limited play" during the heat of the summer to keep the greens as healthy as possible. There is no fee increase planned for 2011 for slips in the Marina.

In early November 2011, it will be required for all Hill County residences to have their address clearly posted on the property. Any WB residents who do not yet have their reflective 5 digit numbers can request them from the WBVFD for a donation of $30 and that includes installation.

Security answered several questions from the residents. All residents are reminded to register their guests at the front gate. Also, please obey the posted speed limits within the development.

George closed the meeting which had been very positively received.

Rally for the Cure® Golf Event a Success

Rally for the Cure

White Bluff Resort hosted their sixth Rally for the Cure® Golf Event on Monday, November 1. Fifty-six ladies enjoyed playing golf while rallying against breast cancer and supporting the Susan G. Komen Rally for the Cure®.

Registration fees from the four lady scramble teams plus miscellaneous donations from other individuals in the community resulted in a $2,000 contribution to the Komen Foundation. A big "thank you" goes out to the many volunteers who helped make this event a huge success.

The mission of Rally for the Cure is to empower people to join the fight against breast cancer by providing a platform for them to educate their family, friends and community on the importance of early detection through an activity they are passionate about. Since 1996 Komen has received over $50 million from Rally events to support their mission.

A participant in the event shared that her granddaughter is in a grassroots organization called the "Ta Tas" that educates young women on the importance of breast cancer health care and early detection. Some of the marketing endeavors left from our event were sent to this group. For more information and to help spread the news to parents and grandparents, go to the website www.savethetatas.com.

Individuals can support this great cause by continuing to save the pink lids from Yoplait, Dannon and Activa yogurt. Donations will benefit breast cancer research.

WB VFD Says Thanks
Posted October 1, 2010

The White Bluff VFD would like to thank everyone who helped make the 2010 Street Dance a big success.

Over 200 people attended this year's event, and many more who could not attend contributed donations. The kids enjoyed a special storytime and entertainment just for them, and young and old alike were interested in the Air Evac helicopter that flew in for the event.

As in past years, the raffle was a lot of fun. There were over 35 raffle items, and it was fun to see who won what items. Several people had luck on their side that night and won more than one item, which led to some friendly ribbing from the crowd.

The cash pot drew a lot of interest. The lucky winner donated the proceeds back to the VFD, which was greatly appreciated.

The WB Water Committee donated the remainder of their funds to the department in a short presentation. Guin McGinnis, president of the VFD, and Bob Kruse, fire chief, accepted the check and promised to use the funds in the best way possible to benefit the residents of White Bluff.

To see some pictures of the event, click here.

Boaters – Lake Level Alert
Posted September 11, 2010

Good news: the recent 10" or so of rains have filled the lake above the 'normal' level of 533 feet to a peak of 535 feet (now back close to 533 with recent releases from Whitney Dam). The bad news is that the lake and surrounding streams have not been flooded in some time, and this means that for the next several weeks, boaters need to beware of floating logs and other debris in the lake.

Some of those large stumps that were just above the surface a couple of weeks ago are now just below, so beware when boating in areas with stumps.

Also, if your boat is in the marina, check it for water accumulation during the storms.

Posted July 18, 2010 (updated August 22, 2010)

(In August, due to funding, Lake Whitney Arts had to cancel this performance. )

Surf's Up !
Posted July 18, 2010

Well, actually the lake level is up. Thanks to a substantial water release from Possum Kingdom Lake and Lake Granbury, we have an additional 3 1/2 feet of water in Lake Whitney over the last couple of weeks and are now above the lake level where we started the summer. At 532 feet, we are just 1 foot below "full".

With the lake level up, it is a great time to take a ride up the Brazos. The river is navigable all the way to Ham Creek Park where there are restroom facilities and a picnic area. Be sure to use a map for your trip upriver to avoid the mud flats.

White Bluff Now "Favorites / Bookmarks"
Posted July 18, 2010

If you have setup "Favorites" or "Bookmarks" in your browser for any of the pages in White Bluff Now except the home page, you will most likely need to save them again.

When we first envisioned White Bluff Now, we thought it would be 6-7 pages of information. It has grown to over 70 pages at this point, and we have had to switch to more robust software to maintain the site effectively.

The site should look nearly identical, with the exception of adding a new button on the left menu for Recycling, and a new page listing the WB POA Board of Directors now.

Please heed the warning signs and stay away from the greens until approximately July 18. Please do not allow your pets to roam free near these greens during this period. We will remove the signs from the greens when it is safe.

Windows Rattled by Explosion
Posted March 12, 2010

Some residents of White Bluff heard an explosion and felt their windows rattle around 4 pm today, followed by smoke coming from Steiner Valley Ranch.

It turns out the two events were unrelated. The explosion was a dynamite explosion coming from one of the limestone quarries in Bosque county, and the fire was a controlled burn by some ranch hands at Steiner Valley Ranch.
